Cellulose converted directly into fuel (iso-butanol)

Cellulose

An important development has come out of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory that allows the bio processing of cellulose directly into iso-butanol. The work of the researchers is available online in Applied and Environmental Microbiology for a fee. The direct nature of the biologic cellulose to iso-butanol conversion has the potential to result in significant cost savings as compared to conventional multistep processes. The microbes that were developed are transgenic derivatives of clostridium cellulolyticum. The principal researcher for the cellulose to iso-butanol project was James Liao of UCLA.
