The Obama administration or the EPA is cracking down on cross state air pollution. Although the regulation is an EPA regulation the opening sentence of the press release for the regulation reads “[b]uilding on the Obama Administration’s strong record of protecting the public’s health…” The new smokestack emission control standards that will predominantly effect existing power generation and industrial facilities in the Eastern portion of the United States. The EPA claims that 34,000 premature deaths could be prevented by the regulations. The focus of the new EPA rule is on smokestacks that have a substantial portion of their pollution effects occurring in states other than the state in which the stack is located. The new rules are scheduled to be implemented between 2012 and 2014.
