Gas fracking proppants keep fractures open

United States Patent 7,902,125 issued to Jozef Bicerano and Robert Albright and is entitled “Thermoset nanocomposite particles, processing for their production, and their use in oil and natural gas drilling applications ” The invention teaches the use of thermoset polymer compositions as proppants to keep the fractures from fracking processes open so that oil and gas may be produced.

In one embodiment of the invention, a gravel pack is modified inside of a wellbore by adding polymeric spherical beads into the gravel pack along with nanoscale fillers such as carbon black or fumed silica. The mixture may be held together in a thermoset polymer matrix. As an example the polymer holding the matrix together may be styrene-ethylvinylbenzene-divinylbenzene terpolymer. Figure 3 shown below demonstrates how the aggregates formed can take various shapes including fractal type of formations.
