Organic arsenic in your chicken?

Roxarsone

Roxarsone

The FDA has announced the discontinuation of use of an organic arsenic product, 4-Hydroxy-3-nitrobenzenearsonic acid (Roxarsone), sold by a Pfizer Inc. subsidiary as 3-Nitro®. The product is organic arsenic in the same way that gasoline is organic. That is, it is a molecule that contains carbon atoms. It is not “organic” as in organic farming techniques. The FDA press release on the arsenic compound indicates that the long-standing use of the arsenic compound was with the understanding that the arsenic would remain in organic form as it passed through the chicken. FDA testing revealed that the inorganic form of arsenic was present in small quantities in the meat of the tested chickens with an  organic arsenic diet. The FDA has not indicated that there is a substantial health risk from existing chickens that have eaten the organic arsenic product.
