Turning sewage into electricity

United States Patent 7,915,749 to John Chupa of Farmington Hills, Michigan and two others is entitled “Method for generating electrical power from municipal wastewater.” The patented method takes a sewage mixture containing water and solid waste and separates that solid waste from the wastewater. The clean water goes through a hydraulic turbine to produce electrical power and the solid waste goes to a digester that produces gas. Although the hydraulic turbine seems like it would be limited to fairly unique circumstances the idea of harnessing methane from the solid waste seems valuable.
