Balancing Safety and Environmentalisim

Dechlorane Plus

Dechlorane Plus

With the news that another halogenated flame retardant is raising concern relating to its environmental effects, I will spend my next few post discussing patents and innovation associated with the Dechlorane Plus.  Specifically, Chemical and Engineering News reported that Dechlorane Plus may need to be considered a ubiquitous chemical compound based on its appearance near the north pole.  Dechlorane plus was patented May 7, 1968 and received patent number 3,382,204 listing Edward Gouinlock of Buffalo, NY as the first named inventor.  It is currently manufactured by OxyChem and is one of many important fire retardant additives. Finding the right mix of chemical compositions to support the important fire protection standards we have while addressing environmental concerns is a difficult but important balancing act.
