Bio-oil: Wood to Oil patent for quick biomass conversion

Barry Freel of Greely, California has invented and patented a process for rapidly converting wood or other biomass into oil or other hydrocarbons. His wood to oil patent teaches the rapid heating of the wood to a temperature of around 500°C followed by a rapid quenching of the resulting vapor stream. Interestingly, the wood or other biomass material is heated by solid particles like sand. The patent is entitled “Rapid thermal conversion of biomass” and was assigned to Ensyn Renewables, Inc. of Wilmington, Delaware.  This novel and method of converting woody materials and other biomass was awarded United States patent number 7,905,990.
