Fracking may pose radiation risk

The New York Times has an interesting article on the radioactive effects of drilling waste from wells that use the newer hydraulic fracturing techniques. The article discusses how previously unreleased documents from the EPA and from industry groups show that the risks associated with radioactive water contamination is higher than previously reported and that water treatment plants may be ill equipped to handle the contents of the waste. One interesting detail uncovered in the NYT story is that Pennsylvania drilling waste topped 1.3 billion gallons over the course of the past three years, which is much more than was widely known prior to the NYT report.
