Chang Soo Kim and other inventors at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology received a patent for the separation of SO2 from a gaseous mixture that is able to operate in an iodine-sulfur cycle at high temperatures and with greater purity results than previously known.  The use of ionic liquids such as imidazolium acetate in the separation process was cited as an important part of improving upon the continuous operation.  Recently issued United States Patent 7,749,475 entitled “Method for separation and recycle of pure sulfur dioxide from a gaseous mixture in IS cycle with ionic liquids” contains the details of the invention.
