United States Patent 7,820,025 issued to Lee Edward Ciampi of St. Paul Minnesota and Luke J. Daly of Orlando Florida. They invented a localized ferrate generation system that operates on electrolysis. According to their patent application, “[t]hree approaches for ferrate synthesis are known: electrolysis, oxidation of Fe2O3 in an alkaline melt, or oxidation of Fe(III) in a concentrated alkaline solution with a strong oxidant.” Ferrate Treatment Technologies, LLC, Of Orlando, FL, the same company referenced in the Economist story, is the assignee of the patent.
